Sky+HD - frequently asked questions

Your HD and Sky+HD questions answered...

About High Definition (HD)

What is HD?

HD, or high definition is the next step in the evolution of television, which uses the latest technology to bring clearer images in to your home – pictures that are up to five times sharper than standard definition TV.

How does HD TV work?

High definition TV has up to five times the number of pixels of normal TV, producing a better picture quality.

What does 'HD ready' mean?

The 'HD ready' logo was created so that consumers in Europe can quickly and easily identify that a television is capable of processing and displaying high definition signals, based on a set of minimum functionality standards. Sky+HD is designed to work with HD ready TVs. There are other logos that you can find on some HD televisions, however the only official 'HD ready' logos are based on clear, well defined criteria.

How do I know if my TV is HD ready?

Look for the 'HD ready' logo on your television, or check your TV's instructions for the HD ready logo in its specifications. HD ready televisions capable of displaying the full detail of an HD signal carry the 'HD ready 1080p' logo.

I have an HD ready TV. Will I automatically be able to watch HD programmes?

No. In order to watch programmes in high definition on your HD ready TV, you will also need an HD receiver, like the Sky+HD box, and to be watching an HD channel.

I've heard there are different HD formats. What's the difference between them?

HD signals come in three main formats: 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The number refers to the number of horizontal lines displayed on the TV screen and the letter to how these lines are broadcast and decoded on to your TV.

Will the 1080i or 1080p format produce a better picture than 720p?

It depends on the size of your television and type of programming. If you're buying a wide or large screen (anything over 37 inches) you'll need a TV capable of displaying the full 1080 lines to experience the best quality picture that Sky+HD can bring you. Many types of TV programmes are best suited to the higher resolution of 1080i, while others may look better in the progressive 720p format. Sky+HD can receive both 720p and 1080i broadcasts, allowing each HD channel to choose to broadcast in the format best suited to their type of programmes.

About Sky+HD

What is Sky+HD?

With Sky+HD you can experience television like never before with up to five times more picture detail, incredibly vibrant colours and superb quality sound. Plus you get all the Sky+ features such as record, pause, rewind and series link, and twice the storage capacity of a Sky+ box.

Why should I choose Sky+HD as my HD provider?

What format will Sky's HD channels broadcast in?

The highest format of high definition TV broadcast in the UK is 1080i, with Sky+HD supporting both this and the 720p HD format. Each HD channel chooses which format is best for their programmes.

How can I get Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound with HD?

Many HD programmes are broadcast in stunning Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, delivering top quality audio to accompany your HD picture. In order to immerse yourself in surround sound, you'll need a compatible home cinema system. Don't worry if you don't have one – you'll still experience the same amazing picture quality of high definition and stereo sound.
